Notable Traits: These are listed to provide a guideline of the NPC's personality. The terms from Pendragon have been used (see Enclosure #1 for details of using this system in Orlanthi settings), but only for illustrative purposes. The use of the word 'notable' here does not necessarily imply a particular numerical value for the Pendragon trait.

The chieftain of a Torkani clan must be an initiate of Argan Argar and of either Orlanth or Ernalda. The majority (but less than an 'Orlanthi All') have been men, although a higher proportion of women become chieftains than among many other Orlanthi tribes, especially among agrarian clans such as the Siganti. Jorien is named 'leadhelm' because of the magic lead helmet which he obtained from the Uz.

Sigebryss is a distant cousin of Jorien, a member of the same Bloodline, but not a close relative. She is known as 'the Fair' on account of her pale blonde hair - the term 'Fair' is not generally taken to indicate beauty (or lack of it) among the Torkani, who find a dusky complexion more attractive.

The leader of the tribal Humakti warband, Kandar is also a member of the tribal council. As leader of the huscarls, he speaks on their behalf as well as advising on military matters in general. He has a particular hatred of the Telmori people, whom he regards as little better than beasts. He is single, dedicating his life to his god.

The senior of the two Siganti priests of Argan Argar, Garonag also happens to be the younger brother of Jorien Leadhelm, giving him a significant voice in clan affairs. He speaks on behalf of the priests and merchants.

While the voice of Esrola on the clan ring is sometimes a priestess of that deity, this by no means essential. Her role is to speak for the farmers, while Ernalda speaks for women in general. Manara is a friendly woman, liked by all, and is an expert brewer of ale.

Landogar represents the herdsmen on the tribal ring. Most are not, in fact, shepherds, because this task is generally given to older boys (initiates of Voriof) while the mainstay of the tribal economy is the cows which are looked after by adults. Landogar is a powerful Storm Voice, and one of the more magically potent members of the clan.

Toril is getting old, and his eyesight is no longer as good as it was in his youth. It is generally agreed that he is unlikely to remain a High Hunter for much longer, and that he will soon resign his seat on the Clan ring in favour of a younger man. Toril accepts this with his usual good humour, but would doubtless remain as an important advisor (and member of the Outer Ring) for he knows much that is useful and is ever eager to give others the benefit of his insights.

Yrsa is the thirty-seventh Queen of the Torkani, to whom all the clan chieftains pledge their loyalty. The position of Queen is synonymous with that of priest of Orlanth Rex (not 'Orlanth Regina', even among the matriarchal Torkani!). Because of their specific ethnic and religious links, the clans of the Torkani are more tightly bound than those of most other Orlanthi tribes - although this does not apply to the Vandradi, who are not ethnically Torkani, but none the less, have the same legal links to their tribe as any other clan, and it is the clan which is the most important unit in society. Before becoming Queen, Yrsa was a member of the Ostoki noble bloodline, and is a cousin of their current chieftain. Unusually, Yrsa was already a member of the cult of Orlanth (Vinga sub-cult) before her accession, and she is a skilled warrior.

The Queen's present concerns are focussed on the tribe's traditional enemies, the Alda-Churi and Dinacoli tribes, particularly now that those two forces have united under 'Prince' Harvar Ironfist and the stultifying and oppresive cult of Yelmalio. Although she recognises the Lunars as a threat and would be eager to see them gone, it is the Yelmalions who have been so succesful in raiding her people's lands and who have caused the most direct misery. Yrsa feels that if the threat posed by the god of light was overcome first, the Lunars' position would be seriously weakened, and a rebellion would stand more chance of throwing them from the kingdom. This has thrown her into direct opposition to Ranulf Grimblade, the King of the Culbrea, with whom her tribe are technically allied as part of the Jonstown tribal confederation.

Kulbrasta is one of the leading merchants to deal almost exclusively with the Uz. She has made many trips into Dagori Inkarth, but knows enough to remain on her guard while there. She spends around half her time at Storlock, with the rest divided between trips to Dagori Inkarth and the markets of Goodfarm Vale. She understands the Uz as well as any human can, and appreciates their non-human nature for what it is.

Heynar is a somewhat pretentious scholar, and has amassed a small library of tracts and missives on the Uz race. Although he has visited the human/Uz settlement of Storlock several times, he has only once actually travelled into Uz territory. Instead, the great bulk of his knowledge comes from his books. Once one can get past his condescending manner, he can impart a good deal of useful information, especially on matters of Uz history and mythology (as far as any human has knowledge of these things). More practical matters of dealing with Uz are, however, much less his forte (not that he'd admit it) although he does at least know the basics.

YENSTARA KEENBLADE of the Erlendings

Yenstara is one of many women among the Erlendings who have been forced to take up arms in recent times. She fosters an abiding hatred of Yelmalions, who killed her brothers and parents. She also vocally opposes the Lunars, although she has the intelligence to stop short of directly incurring their wrath at the present time. She whole-heartedly supports the Queen's policy of dealing with the Alda-Churi first and the Lunars second, but in practice, she tends to fight injustice wherever she sees it and takes part in a number of covert actions against the Lunar forces of occupation.

HARVIK THE MACE of the Ostoki

A bald and heavily tattooed warrior, Harvik is violent, crude and unpleasant. He hates anything chaotic, and considers almost all Lunars to qualify in this regard. While far too disorganised to be able to form any kind of resistance movement, he has been a one-man thorn in the Lunars' side, striking them down whenever an opportunity presents itself. He is currently believed to be in hiding somewhere in the Daytime Woods, and is said to prefer the company of trolls to that of his fellow humans.

Currently the most powerful magic-wielder among the Torkani, Nalasine is unconcerned with matters of poltics and takes no part in clan or tribal discussions. Her abilities are not primarily concerned with combat, and instead relate to concealment, suppression of Fire/Light magics and manipulation of darkness. She is currently biding her time, waiting for some future prophicied event where her abilities will be needed to protect her people. She looks to be a little over half her chronological age.

SPIDER-KILLS-CENTIPEDES of the Asmandi

A rare example of a Torkani shaman, Spider-Kills-Centipedes can control many spirits of both air and darkness. She lives on the eastern slopes of the Indigo mountains, on the border between Asmandi and Vandradi lands, with only a single apprentice to assist her. She is likely to be hostile to any strangers who approach without strong proof of their good intentions, and never gives her assistance for free. She is, however, highly skilled and regarded with awe by the people of both the Asmandi and Vandradi clans.

OUTSIDERS

VANIA INESTERIX

Vania has been placed in command of the small garrison at Stonegate, and hence is, in effect, the overseer of the Torkani lands for the Lunar authorities. Only a mid-ranking officer, she was posted here by Fazzur in the hope that the Torkani could relate better to a female rather than a male commander. A Dara Happan by birth, she has rejected most of her upbringing, embracing instead the new ways of the Red Goddess. As a result she has none of the inherent dislike of  Torkani ways prevalent amongst other Dara Happans, and is even prepared to treat Uz fairly (she doesn't even call them 'digijelm').

The Torkani are nominally a 'free' tribe, so that the hand of Lunar government is relatively light, and only token taxes have to be paid. Vania's position is therefore more of an ambassador and guarantor of the safety of Lunar merchants or other travellers, than she is an actual military commander of the district. She regards the Torkani as primitives, and would like to see them embrace the Lunar Way, but she has enough common sense not to push the matter.

She is a firm believer in the power of justice and in the rightness of the Lunar Way and tries to be as fair a commander as she can, balancing the needs of visiting Lunars with those of the locals. Obviously, this is not always appreciated by the Lunars, who believe that things should be biased rather more in their favour. The Torkani, for their part, are sufficiently suspicious of the Empire and their hostile gods that they rarely appreciate her justice either.

MAROFISS GREEN

Marofiss has recently taken up residence at Stonegate, where she hopes to be able to open up trade with both the Torkani and the Uz. She is very ambitious, and that often blinds her to the practicality of her situation. Most of the locals distrust her, and her business has not been very succesful so far. She has made overtures to the temple of Argan Argar, hoping that she might be initiated so that she can deal with the Uz more directly than at present. So far, the temple has rebuffed her and there is little chance that this will change in the near future. Without Argan Argar support, her two trips to Storlock acheived nothing and she is unlikely to make another trip until and unless the situation changes.

URDANG

Urdang is the leading merchant in Storlock, specialising in the sale of trollkin slaves and the purchase of foodstuffs. He bosses about all of the other Storlock Uz, save for the occaisional visiting female from Dagori Inkarth. By the standards of Uz, he gets on well with humans, having lived alongside them for nearly two decades. Even so, there are no humans he could really call friends, although he has come to respect the ability and common sense of Kulbrasta.
